This beautiful bird will always be found near water. It prefers quite inland dams where it can be seen standing still for long periods in shallow water. When hunting, it moves slowly through the water on the lookout for fish and frogs, when it spots them, it thrust forward with its sharp bill in order to catch its prey. The final thrust is very rapid, the shape of the neck, assisting in this movement as it straightens.
